Ancient DNA analysis reveals Wiltshire’s Upton Lovell Shaman was a woman. Our map shows the location of the barrow in which it was discovered. Sir Richard Colt Hoare was on to something — in his 1812 Ancient History of Wiltshire he describes the necklace found as “most beautiful” and remarked that even a woman of his time “would not … disdain to wear” it.
